pH in soil

Soil pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline soil is. It’s important for plant growth because it affects the availability of nutrients in the soil.

Soil pH scale

  • pH 7: Neutral
  • pH above 7: Alkaline
  • pH below 7: Acidic
  • pH 4.0–5.0: Strongly acidic

Most soils have pH values between 3.5 and 10. In higher rainfall areas the natural pH of soils typically ranges from 5 to 7, while in drier areas the range is 6.5 to 9. Soils can be classified according to their pH value: 6.5 to 7.5—neutral.
